Insomnia treatment for Chicago adults

We treat adults who have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or waking too early. The treatment is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I). It changes sleep timing and habits without medication. We see most patients via telehealth with Illinois-licensed clinicians, and a limited number of clinicians also see patients in person.

Telehealth here means a private video session from home.

In network with Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Advantage, Blue Cross Community Health Plans, Cigna / Evernorth, Medicare, UnitedHealthcare / Optum, UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage, Veterans Affairs Community Care Network — we send claims directly to these plans.

What chronic insomnia looks like in Chicago

Chronic insomnia means trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or getting back to sleep on three or more nights a week for at least three months. It may mean an hour awake at bedtime, waking at 3 a.m. or waking before the alarm. Rotating shifts, early starts and late trains can make the problem harder to manage. CBT-I is adjusted to your work and sleep schedule.

Repeated breathing pauses during sleep can point to sleep apnea. Loud snoring is another sign. It is different from insomnia, though one person can have both. We treat the insomnia, we have partners who treat the apnea, and our clinician coordinates any referral that is needed.

Your first appointment and follow-up visits

Your first appointment reviews how your nights go now, how long the problem has lasted, what you have tried and whether anything besides insomnia may be involved. Next comes a two-minute morning sleep diary: a note of bedtime, sleep, waking and getting up. It shapes your sleep window, the set bedtime and wake time your clinician adjusts as sleep improves. Follow-up visits are commonly weekly, with six to eight sessions in the main course. Many patients report early improvement within a few weeks. The treatment page explains each step.

Questions Chicago patients ask first

Which insurance plans do you take for Chicago patients?

We currently accept Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Advantage, Blue Cross Community Health Plans, Cigna / Evernorth, Medicare, UnitedHealthcare / Optum, UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage, Veterans Affairs Community Care Network. We verify benefits before your first appointment. Your share depends on your plan and deductible. The same plans apply to video and in-person appointments. Self-pay is also available.

Can I be seen if I live in Illinois but far from Chicago?

Yes. Our clinicians can meet with you by video anywhere in Illinois, including Rockford, the Quad Cities, Springfield, Champaign and Carbondale. You must be physically in Illinois during the session. Distance only matters if you want an in-person appointment in Chicago.

Do I need a sleep study if apnea may be involved?

A sleep study is an overnight test that measures breathing and movement. It can identify sleep apnea, but it is not needed to diagnose insomnia. Sleep apnea and insomnia often occur together. We treat the insomnia, we have partners who treat the apnea, and our clinician coordinates any referral that is needed.
