What to expect from online treatment

Chronic insomnia means trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or returning to sleep on three or more nights a week for at least three months. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) uses weekly visits to improve sleep timing and habits without medication. The first appointment takes about 50 minutes. Your clinician asks about your current sleep, history and what you have tried. Then a two-minute morning sleep diary records bedtime, sleep, waking and getting up. Your clinician uses it to set a sleep window, fixed bed and wake times that widen as sleep improves. Treatment usually runs six to eight weeks. The first improvements often appear within a few weeks. See the step-by-step treatment guide.

Sleep apnea is a breathing condition that causes short pauses during sleep. It often involves loud snoring. Sleep apnea and insomnia often occur together. We treat the insomnia, we have partners who treat the apnea, and our clinician coordinates any referral that is needed.

Statewide Illinois sleep-care questions

Do you see patients throughout Illinois?

Yes. Video appointments are available in Rockford, the Quad Cities, Springfield, Champaign, Metro East, Carbondale and every Illinois county. Your location does not change the treatment or the clinicians available to you. Distance only matters if you want an in-person appointment in Chicago.

Must I be physically in Illinois during a video visit?

Yes. The licence applies to your location during the appointment, not your home address or insurance card. Home, work or school is acceptable if you have a private room. Tell your clinician before any visit that would take place outside Illinois.

How do I choose between a sleep specialist and a therapist?

For insomnia, one clinician can often fill both roles. Our Illinois therapists are trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia. It helps patients adjust their sleep schedule, change habits and respond differently to unhelpful thoughts. If sleep apnea may be involved, your clinician coordinates care with a partner who treats it.
